Trees and shrubs are the backbone and backdrop of the landscape. The Garden contains a vast collection of trees and shrubs in a variety of species, sizes and ages. Each year new trees and shrubs are incorporated into the Garden. Selection is based on plant hardiness for the region and to promote plant diversity. As with all landscape plantings, choosing the right tree or shrub for the right place is paramount to success. Sun exposure and moisture requirements, along with height and width ranges are fundamental in determining which species and cultivar are best suited to placement. A visit to the Garden provides the opportunity to take a first hand look at some of the the many trees, vines, and shrubs currently growing in the greater Cincinnati area. The Zoo actively maintains a photo collection of these species so that visitors have a quick point of reference for local flora.
