CREW Post-Doctoral Fellowship

The Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW) at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden is seeking to hire a Post-Doctoral Fellow.  This post-doctoral fellowship is funded through a Federal Grant and is renewable on a yearly basis for up to three years.  This position is overtime-exempt.  Bi-weekly pay for this position is $1,038.46, which is $27,000 annualized.  Full benefits are included.

Position Summary: The successful candidate will conduct basic and applied research and provide technical skills necessary to carry out the goals of a National Leadership Grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services entitled: Integrating genome resource banks and assisted reproduction into collection management to preserve and enhanceendangered rhinoceros and imperiled small cat populations.  Primary emphasis of the grant is focused on sperm banking and artificial insemination (AI) in Asian rhinos, and sperm and embryo banking, AI/IVF/ET in small cat species.  Candidates must be willing and able to travel and conduct some of their work at other Zoos across the globe and/or at international field sites.

Qualifications: Applicants must possess a Ph.D. in animal or biological sciences and have expertise in several of the following areas: gamete biology, endocrinology, hormonal manipulation/cycle synchronization, gamete/embryo cryopreservation, laparoscopy, IVF, AI, ET and general animal husbandry.  Applicants should have experience writing and publishing scientific manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals.  Prior experience with wildlife and/or working in a zoo setting is desirable but not mandatory; Command of Windows-based software and applications is required; Ability to work well with CREW scientists, Zoo staff, volunteers, and Zoo donors, as well as the general public; Requires the proficient, effective, and accurate management of information and data; Requires a flexible schedule to attend special events and meetings; Must be self motivated with an outstanding work ethic; Must be results/product oriented and must represent CREW in a professional manner; Must be able to create, maintain and generate timely reports as requested; Must be prompt and reliable in the areas of attendance and performance;  Must have a visa to work legally in the U.S. and must have a U.S. driver’s license.

Working Conditions: While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent is regularly required to stand, walk, and utilize manual dexterity to use computer mouse and keyboard. The incumbent may be exposed to outside weather conditions and must be able to lift/move/carry up to 25 pounds without assistance. Employment is contingent upon passing a post-offer, pre-employment drug screen.

Position Summary: This position will promote the mission of the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden through the activities of the Wings of Wonder Program (summer show and outreach activities).  This position is overtime-eligible, and is eligible for the Zoo’s benefits programs for non-union employees. 

Representative responsibilities/duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Assists with the care of Wings of Wonder Program animal collection and facilities
  • Assists with the training of Wings of Wonder Program animals
  • Presents the above-mentioned programs, incorporating the best practices of interpretive and environmental education methods
  • Supervise part-time employees (instructors) or Volunteer Educators for the above-mentioned programs
  • Implement strategies designed to accomplish yearly budgetary and strategic goals
  • Requires a flexible schedule including evening and weekend efforts and ability to travel with limited notice
  • Additional duties as assigned by the Department

Working Conditions: Employment is conditional on successful completion of a pre-employment drug screen.  While performing the duties of the job, the incumbent is regularly required to stand, walk, drive a car and utilize manual dexterity to use computer mouse and keyboard and other office equipment. The incumbent must use live animals in programs.  Incumbent may be exposed to outside weather conditions and must be able to lift/move/carry up to 50 pounds without assistance;Requires the ability to work a flexible schedule, including evening and weekend hours, and the ability to travel with limited notice.

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a related field and experience with operant training techniques is required; Experience with training a variety of bird species is highly desired; Experience leading environmental education or interpretive programs and with curriculum development desired.  The ideal candidate will possess and demonstrate the following attributes: strong organizational, interpersonal and communication (both oral and written) skills; demonstrated initiative and a strong conservation ethic; appropriate professional appearance, attitude and personality to work effectively with Zoo staff members, donors, guests and the public.  Requires a valid driver’s license with an insurable driving record.

The Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden Education Department is hiring for its Nocturnal Adventures overnight program!

The Zoo is closed and we have the keys! Come teach overnights at the Zoo! Our programs include: Animal Adaptations, Sleep with the Manatees, and Wolf Woods.

Applicants need only have enthusiasm for the position, an interest in wildlife and conservation, and a desire to work with people in an educational setting. A general knowledge of biology and ecological concepts is required and previous educational experience with children is desirable. You must also have a flexible schedule as evening stays are required.

HORTICULTURE SEASONAL HELP NEEDED

Come help maintain one of the finest horticultural display gardens in the country! We work all year round to put on such brilliant displays, and we need some help from you this fall. The Horticulture Department is looking for qualified candidates for help with planting, pruning, watering, weeding and the general maintenance of the Zoo's extensive gardens. While Zoo Blooms, the largest display of tulips in the area, may be several months away, our staff and volunteers are starting the process now, to ensure that the tens of thousands of bulbs are ready when the time is right next year.

Qualifications/Experience: Schooling and/or experience in horticulture, landscape maintenance, botany or related field; must be able to lift and move 50 pounds without mechanical assistance; and have a valid driver’s license and be insurable to drive a Zoo vehicle;  Must be available to work weekend hours.

Front Gate Photographer:

Our Front Gate Photographers meet and greet guests as they enter the Park. Photographers snap quick shots of family groups and friends, then offer a "no obligation" ticket allowing guests to view their photos at a time of their choice. Front Gate Photographers also spend a portion of their day at the Photo Sales Counter, greeting interested customers and selling the souvenir photos.

Face Paint:

Our Face Painters use a bit of "theater magic" to transform kids into characters by creating colorful hand-painted images directly on the faces of young Zoo guests! Artistic skills are helpful, but not necessary.
